日本語のクラスについて (Japanese Language Classes)

Associated Kyoto Program
2017-2018  Hubbard Year

1. Japanese Language Program Policies and Curriculum

The goal of our program is to provide you with the means of improving your communicative skills and to assist you in achieving higher proficiency in written and spoken modern Japanese.  Therefore, the program encourages students to speak Japanese not only in Japanese class but with your host family, on Doshisha campus, and while participating in cultural activities so that you will acquire the habit of communicating in Japanese.  Please keep in mind that practice makes a difference.

2. Classes

Students are required to take eleven sessions a week.  Students will be divided into four language classes.  Each group will meet daily for two sessions of 50 minutes each, at 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.  In addition, students will also take an elective Japanese class meeting at 11:00 a.m. once a week (See Section D).

A) Class Attendance
  1. Continuous enrollment and satisfactory progress in Japanese language classes are required of AKP students, including both one-semester and full-year students.
  2. Daily attendance and active participation in class are mandatory.  Absences will affect one’s final grade negatively. (See Section E (2))
  3. Please arrive at all class sessions punctually.  Three tardy arrivals will be counted as one absence.  Tardiness of more than 20 minutes will be treated as one absence.
  4. If you know in advance that you will miss a class session due to extraordinary circumstances, please inform your teacher directly by e-mail.  You are responsible for making up any missed assignments.
  5. If there are unavoidable circumstances preventing you from observing this attendance policy, please consult with the Resident Director.

B) Preparation and Homework
  1. You are expected to be thoroughly prepared for each class session.  Expect to spend a minimum of one hour per session (two hours per day) on preparation and homework.
  2. Homework must be turned in by the due date.

C) Textbooks

The instructor of each class will explain the textbooks/handouts to be used.

D) Weekly Elective Class(選択日本語)

Students choose one of two following classes:

①すいすい読もう (Extensive Reading) Wednesday, 11:00-11:50

The focus is on extensive reading of level-appropriate natural Japanese. Students pick a book from our すいすい book collection.  The 4 rules of this class are: 1. Start reading a book that you can read easily, 2. No looking up words in a dictionary, 3. Keep reading even if you encounter words that you don’t know, 4. Stop reading if you get lost or don’t find the book interesting and move on to the next book. The emphasis is on stress-free reading for fun.

②どんどん話そう (Topic Discussions)   Thursday, 11:00-11:50

The objective of this class is to acquire more expressiveness in speaking in Japanese on different topics.  Students try to convey their thoughts as much as they can by exchanging ideas with their peers and native speakers to become a more sophisticated speaker of Japanese.  Doshisha students will join for some of the class meetings.

E) Grades

(1) Your final grade will be calculated as follows:

Daily attendance and class participation     15%
Final examination15%
Other categories in total70%

(This will differ somewhat according to the class, but will include areas such as aural/oral skills, lesson tests, quizzes, preparation and homework, and project if applicable.)

(2) Attendance Policies:
  1. Absence of 7 individual sessions of regular class will automatically lower one’s final grade by one step (e.g., A- will be lowered to B+).  Students absent the equivalent of three weeks or more will be given the grade of F.
  2. The attendance of weekly elective class is counted separately.  Three absences or more will result in lowering one’s overall final grade in Japanese language by one step.
(3) Check with your home campus for its policy on minimal grade requirements for transfer of credit.

(4) The final examination schedule is set and may not be changed without permission from the Resident Director.  Students will not be allowed to take final examinations before the scheduled date.

2. Academic Integrity

AKP’s standards of academic integrity are no different from those of your home institutions.  You are expected to follow the basic principles of honesty and intellectual integrity.  The work you submit in any of your classes must be your own.  Any dishonest conduct or failure to satisfy the academic standards will result in a grade of “F” or dismissal from the Program.  For further details on academic policy and procedures, please consult the Student Handbook.  If you have any questions, please speak with the Resident Director
